Asian-Pacific Islander Films

We look at the Sikh community. Sikhism is a religion practiced mostly by people whose origins are in Northwestern India. There are over half a million in the United States.
"Of Beauty & Deities" focuses on the classical, southern Indian bharata natyam. This is a dance and music form which tells the stories of Hindu deities, and the dance movements are a form of sign language. To make it more accessible, we have "translated" one of the dances. The documentary relies heavily upon the expertise of K.P. and Katherine Kunhiraman, dance instructors trained in the prestigious Kalakshetra Institute in Chennai (formerly Madras), India.
